Legend Kennels is extremely proud of our red and brindle Bullmastiffs, also known as the "Gentle Guardian". Bullmastiffs were originally bred to be a gameskeeper dog. They patrolled and guarded large sections of property against poachers. Because they were used in the evening hours the original colors of a Bullmastiff were dark shades of red and brindle, making them camoflague with ease. They were trained to pin a man down but never to attack or draw blood. Bullmastiffs are 40% Bulldog and 60% Mastiff. These two breeds combined give the Bullmastiff a broad, stocky and square appearance. Their short coat requires minimal grooming, a good brushing once a week and an occasional bath. Due to their build and their short coat a Bullmastiff fairs best as being an indoor dog as extreme temperatures affect them greatly. Although classed as a working dog with the CKC they really can be quite lazy if left to their own devices, couch potatoes are another nickname they have come by quite honestly. They do, however, require daily excercise, a 20 minute walk daily and a fenced yard to romp in is ideal. A well bred Bullmastiff is an excellent addition to any family. Like so many large breeds, Bulllmastiffs have developed a reputation for having hip problems.
